Professor Alan Barber

Specialty interests: General Neurology, Stroke
Professor Barber is a neurologist and stroke sub-specialist. He graduated from the Otago Medical School and completed his neurology training in Auckland. He completed a fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and was awarded a PhD from the University of Melbourne for studies in advanced brain imaging in stroke. He is the Clinical Leader of the Stroke Service at Auckland City Hospital and was appointed the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand Professor of Clinical Neurology in 2008.

Dr Snow trained at University of Auckland School of Medicine and spent 8 years at the University of British Columbia as a clinical researcher into movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease. He currently works at Auckland City Hospital as a neurologist. Dr Snow is the Director of Adult Medical Services and was previously the Clinical Director of Neurology. He leads the Movement Disorders Clinic at Auckland City Hospital. He is Chair of the Neurological Foundation and sits of the board of Mercy Hospice. Dr Snow has an extensive experience in general neurology and specific expertise in Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders. He has expertise in botulinum toxin injections for movement disorders and for chronic migraine.

Dr Alison Charleston

Specialty interests: Geriatric Neurology (65+years old)
Dr Charleston is a graduate of the University of Auckland School of Medicine. She is dual trained in general Geriatric Medicine and Neurology, working in both capacities at Auckland City Hospital. She has particular interests in neurological disorders affecting the elderly (dementia, gait disorders, Parkinson’s disease and related disorders, cerebrovascular disease etc.) and in general geriatric medicine. She manages the regional Motor Neurone Disease service and has an interest in neurological palliative medicine.

Dr Wong graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Auckland and trained in neurology at Auckland Hospital. He then completed Stroke Fellowships in USA and Canada. He returned to New Zealand and worked as a neurologist at Wellington Hospital for five years. He then returned to Auckland to work part-time at Auckland City Hospital as a general neurologist and at Middlemore Hospital as a stroke neurologist.

Dr Brickell graduated from the University Auckland School of Medicine in 1995. She had the opportunity to train in Internal Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital, New York 1997-1999, and then completed a Neurology Fellowship in Seattle. She gained her FRACP in 2006. Dr Brickell is involved in the Dementia Prevention Research Clinic at the Center for Brain Research and works in a Concussion Clinic as well as at Auckland Medical Specialists.

Dr Mark Simpson

Specialty interests: General Neurology, Movement disorders including Parkinson's disease and related conditions. Deep brain stimulation.
After graduating from the University of Auckland School of Medicine Dr Simpson trained in neurology at Auckland City Hospital. He gained further training in Melbourne and Toronto. He has special expertise in the management of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, including deep brain stimulation.

Dr Anderson graduated from the University of Auckland School of Medicine in 1978 and trained in neurology at Auckland Hospital and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York. He returned to New Zealand in 1987 and since then has been a neurologist at Auckland City Hospital and in private practice.

Dr Peter Bergin

Dr Bergin started training in neurology in Wellington, and then spent 5 years in London working at the Royal Free Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square. While there, he completed an MD on the effects of epilepsy on memory. Dr Bergin returned to Auckland in the mid 1990s and has been working at Auckland City Hospital since then, and in private since the early 2000s. He currently oversees the epilepsy surgery programme at Auckland City Hospital. He is leading a clinical research programme into epilepsy (www.epinet.co.nz) . While he has a special interest in epilepsy, he sees patients with a wide range of neurological problems.

He gained a Diploma in Paediatrics though University of Auckland and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Paediatric Neurology. He works at Starship Childrens Hospital as a Specialist Paediatric Neurologist. Dr Patel has an Honorary appointment in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Auckland Medical School and is also involved with postgraduate teaching programmes. He is the New Zealand representative for the Asia Oceania Child Neurology Association and Chairs the New Zealand Paediatric Neurology Clinical Network.

Dr Rosamund Hill

Specialty interests: General Neurology, headache/migraine, concussion/brain injury, epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disorders/autism. ACC on referral from a Case Manager
Dr Hill graduated from the University of Auckland. She commenced neurology training at Auckland City Hospital and then undertook two consecutive fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Boston. On her return to Auckland she undertook an MD, a post-graduate research degree, under Professor Sir Richard Faull. She has subsequently worked at Auckland City Hospital, in private neurology practice, in concussion clinic and is the independent concussion expert for NZ Rugby.
In her specialty area of headache she is experienced in botox treatment for chronic headache.
She has a particular interest in autism as she has a son with autism and intellectual impairment and she is a founding and active member of Minds for Minds, an autism and neurodevelopmental research network.

Dr Richard Frith

Dr Frith is a neurologist and clinical neurophysiologist at Auckland Medical Specialists and Auckland City Hospital. He trained in neurology at Auckland Hospital and had his fellowship training in clinical neurophysiology at the Mayo Clinic. He chairs the ADHB Charitable Trust and the Julius Brendel Trust, and is a founding trustee of the Auckland Health Foundation. Dr Frith is also Past President of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists and of the Neurological Association of New Zealand. His private practice is confined to clinical neurophysiology testing; he does not have a private neurology consulting practice. Tests are performed on referral - these include nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG). He has been a consultant neurologist and neurophysiologist at Auckland City Hospital, North Shore Hospital and Auckland Medical Specialists since 2007.

Dr Rudi Kritzinger

Dr Kritzinger completed his psychiatric specialist training in Cape Town. Thereafter he did 3 years of subspeciality training leading towards a CCST in Cambridge and Suffolk UK, which included rotations in Movement disorder, Lewin Stroke Unit, Cambridge Memory Clinic as well as the Oliver Zangwill Centre and Icanho Brain Injury Rehabilitation units. Since coming to New Zealand in 2005, he has been attached to the Department of Liaison Psychiatry at Auckland City Hospital and has provided sessional support to the Community Neurobehavioural Service, Rehab + and ABI Rehabilitation. He has just completed his diploma in Sleep Medicine.

Dr Margaret Wilsher

Specialty Interests -General respiratory medicine including immigration medical assessments, interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis, sleep apnoea.
Dr Wilsher graduated from the University of Otago. She commenced respiratory specialist training at Green Lane Hospital and then undertook a research fellowship in London at the National Heart and Lung Institute and Royal Brompton Hospital. She has continued her academic and clinical career in respiratory medicine in Auckland, specialising in interstitial lung disease, as well accumulating a busy health management and governance portfolio of activities across New Zealand. Her current roles include Respiratory Physician and Chief Medical Officer ADHB and Honorary Professor University of Auckland.

Dr Tim Christmas

Dr Christmas trained as a Respiratory Physician at Auckland City Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. He completed his MD in Perth Western Australia on “The determinants of growth and progression of malignant mesothelioma”. Subsequently he returned as a Respiratory Physician in 1993 to work at Green Lane Hospital before relocating to Auckland City Hospital. Dr Christmas currently works at Auckland City Hospital and at Auckland Medical Specialists as a Respiratory Physician. He is an honorary Senior Lecturer at Auckland Medical School and is involved in medical student teaching at Auckland City Hospital. He is a member of the Pharmac Respiratory Sub Committee. Dr Christmas’s private practice is in general respiratory medicine and sleep disordered breathing but he also has a particular research interest in investigation and management of lung cancer. He is happy to see all aspects of Respiratory medicine.

He currently holds a public appointment at Starship Hospital as a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist, where apart from working in a clinical setting he is actively involved in multiple local, national and international research projects around various aspects of paediatric gastroenterology & intestinal rehabilitation.

Dr Anne Tait

Dr Tait graduated from the University of Auckland School of Medicine in 1999. She began her career in paediatrics at Southland Hospital, with initial registrar training in Auckland then 2.5 years advanced training in the United Kingdom followed by a final year of registrar training in Auckland. She obtained her FRACP qualification in 2008. Her first paediatric consultant job was at Waitakere and North Shore Hospital, then moved to Starship Children’s Hospital in March 2009 where she is currently employed as a full time general paediatrician for both inpatient and outpatient general paediatrics services.
Dr Tait has interests in a wide range of general paediatrics, and has extensive experience in both acute and complex care of children. She has a particular interest in feeding disorders of young children, being the lead paediatrician for the Starship pilot tube wean programme. She also has considerable experience in paediatric dermatology, having previously been the organiser of the paediatric dermatology clinics at Waitakere and Greenlane Hospitals. In addition Dr Tait has experience with chronic pain conditions, having completed the Paediatric Pain Masterclass in Minneapolis in June 2014. She attends a wide variety of conferences and education sessions in both in NZ and overseas and works closely with subspecialists at Starship in order to keep her medical knowledge up to date with current paediatric best practice.

Dr Fran Mouat

Dr Mouat is originally from Scotland and graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1995. She trained in General Paediatrics in Christchurch, New Zealand as well as in the UK before moving to Melbourne to complete advanced training in Paediatric Endocrinology. In 2008 Dr Mouat returned to New Zealand and was appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist and Diabetologist at Starship Child Health, where she is currently the Lead Clinician.
Her research interests include the impact of Coeliac Disease on children with Type 1 Diabetes, growth outcomes in children born following IVF treatment and Adolescent Transition.
Other roles include co-chair of the NZCYCN Intersex Network, member of the NZCYCN Diabetes Network and past Paediatric representative on the RACP Special Advisory Committee for Endocrinology training.

Dr Naveen Pillarisetti

Dr Pillarisetti completed his basic medical training in the City of Pearls, called Hyderabad in India, followed by advanced paediatric training in the UK and Australia. He did his fellowship at the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne where he researched early cystic fibrosis lung disease, and where he developed an interest in early origins of lung disease. He currently works at Starship Children’s Hospital and his private rooms looking after children with a wide variety of respiratory problems. He supports paediatric services across the country through national outreach and consultation services. His special interests are asthma, chronic wet cough, bronchiectasis and complex respiratory problems. His current research interests span the areas of chronic cough, bronchiectasis the study of the airway microbiome in various respiratory conditions.

Dr Yap is currently working at Auckland District Health Board. He graduated from the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom in 2004. Apart from general paediatrics, Dr Yap also has a special interest in rare inheritable genetic disorders. Dr Simon Chin

Specialty interests: Coeliac Disease, Eosinophilic Oesophagitis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Constipation, Aerodigestive Disorders.
Dr Chin is an Otago Medical School graduate and he completed initial paediatric training in Auckland. He has had extensive advanced training in Australia and USA, completing a 2 year clinical fellowship at Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane and also a 3 year fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He works in private and at Starship Children's Hospital with the Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Service and does outreach clinics to provincial centres. He has a special interest in coeliac disease. He performs endoscopy for a variety of conditions such as coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease.
Gastroenterological problems such as difficult to treat reflux, constipation, chronic diarrhoea and recurrent abdominal pain are common in childhood and may lead to significant disruption in daily activities. Early evaluation and treatment may help to manage these conditions effectively.

Dr William Wong

Specialty Interests: Paediatric hypertension, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, haemolytic uraemic syndrome, antenatal renal dilatation, renal stone disease, and other rare kidney disorders. Dr Wong’s current clinical research interests include haemolytic uraemic syndrome and post infectious glomerulonephritis.
Dr Wong is a graduate of the University of Otago and has worked and trained extensively both in Australia and the UK. He undertook his nephrology training in Adelaide, South Australia and Birmingham, UK. He has been a full time consultant paediatric nephrologist at Starship Children’s Hospital since 1995 where he has led a team of highly skilled professionals to care for children with acute and chronic kidney disease. He has also contributed to primary healthcare education through “Research Reviews” commentaries and continuing medical education sessions.
