Prof. Barber graduated from the Otago Medical School and completed his neurology training in Auckland. He completed a fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and was awarded a PhD from the University of Melbourne for studies in advanced brain imaging in stroke.

Alongside his work in general neurology and stroke at Auckland Medical Specialists, he is the Clinical Leader of the Stroke Service at Auckland City Hospital and was appointed the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand Professor of Clinical Neurology in 2008.
