After graduating from the University of Auckland, he trained through Starship Children's Hospital and completed his fellowship in paediatric neurology through Westmead Children's Hospital in Sydney. He gained a Diploma in Paediatrics through the University of Auckland and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Paediatric Neurology.

Alongside his work at Auckland Medical Specialists, he works at Starship Children’s Hospital as a Specialist Paediatric Neurologist. Dr Patel has an Honorary appointment in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Auckland Medical School and is also involved with postgraduate teaching programmes. He is also the New Zealand representative for the Asia Oceania Child Neurology Association and Chairs the New Zealand Paediatric Neurology Clinical Network.

Dr Patel specialises in Paediatric Neurology, Epilepsy, Neuropathy, Muscular Dystrophy, Headache, Migraine, Toe Walking, and Cerebral Palsy.
