Thank you for YOUR REFERRAL

Each specialist at Auckland Medical Specialists requires a referral letter before seeing a patient.

- Fax: 09-638-9947 (preferred)
- Email: referrals@aucklandmed.co.nz
- EDI: akmdspec

We are happy for patients to call us to make the appointment once you have suggested that they are to be seen by one of our specialists. The exceptions are:

  • ACC - see below

  • General Paediatrics, Paediatric Nephrology, Genetics - these referrals are triaged by our Paediatric consultants before any appointments are made. Our administration team will contact the parents / caregivers to make an appointment for their child once the referral has been reviewed (see the Paediatric Referrals option below).

Please note that in most situations we are unable to see urgent cases. Many of our specialists have patient waiting lists of between 6 - 12 weeks. However, the sooner that we have the referral, the sooner that the patient can go on the waiting list to be seen earlier should a cancellation arise.

ACC REFERRAL REQUIREMENTS

  • For Nerve Conduction Studies and EMGS Only

An ACC45 number is required on the referral form. No other ACC information is required for these tests.

  • For an ACC Neurological Consultation, EEG and all other specialist consultations

All ACC referrals must be made through the patient’s Case Manager. Referrals also require the following:

    1. An ACC purchase order number - this is raised by the Case Manager

    2. An ACC service code - for a Specialist Consultation the code is MSDA1. For complex cases the code is MSDA2

The Case Manager will courier the medical notes (referral file) to us and include the patient's ACC number, the ACC purchase order number and the service code. The consultants will review the medical notes and will either agree to see the patient or suggest alternative arrangements. If the patient is to be seen, then Auckland Medical Specialists will contact the patient's Case Manager to make arrangements for the patient to be seen by the agreed consultant.

The average waiting time for ACC patients to be seen by an adult neurologist is between 6 - 12 weeks depending on the waiting lists at the time.

  • Note - If the patient has had a head injury within the past 12 months they are eligible to be seen at a Concussion Clinic. Please contact ACC regarding the ACC883 Concussion Service Referral Forms and the locations of these clinics around New Zealand.

Only a limited number of consultants at Auckland Medical Specialists will see ACC patients for a Medical Single Discipline Assessment (MSDA).

    About MSDAs

    • Medical Single Discipline Assessments (MSDAs) are initiated by ACC and are used to obtain an opinion from a non-treating practitioner who is a medical specialist, when ACC is unable to get this from a treating practitioner. The provider (Medical Specialist) completing a MSDA is able to order tests or investigations if this is necessary for them to be able to come to an opinion. They can also make recommendations for tests or investigations. MSDAs cannot be used to determine cover and ongoing entitlements.

Referrals for MSDAs may only be made by ACC. ACC will not pay for services where clients self-refer or are referred other than by a treatment provider as set out under Clause 4.2.2 within the Service Schedule from ACC.
